MONTERAPPOLI
The residential area of Monterappoli stretches along Via Salaiola, one of the alternative routes to the Via Francigena on the left side of the Elsa river, which for centuries was the route for the loads of rock salt that travelled from Volterra to the Magazzino del Sale [Salt Warehouse] in Empoli.
Mentioned for the first time in the 10th century as one of the possessions of the Marquis Ugo of Tuscany, Mons Rappuli cum sua curte then appeared in an imperial diploma among the castles granted in 1164 to the Guidi Counts by Federico Barbarossa. In 1254 Monterappoli was sold to Florence along with many other Guidi castles (including Empoli). Since it was located near the banks of the Elsa river, it was fortified and expanded by the Florentines. Thanks to the Statutes of Monterappoli of 1393, we know that many houses were built close to the medieval walls that are now incorporated into more modern buildings. From the Land Registry of 1427, on the other hand, we know that the settlement had been built up and included a Castelvecchio [Old Castle] and a Castelnuovo [New Castle]. With its turrets and fortifications, the castle of Monterappoli is also depicted in a famous map by Leonardo da Vinci now preserved in Windsor (RL 12278).
